The Snark is aware of an issue which seems to vex many good people. It is called onomatopoeia. Simply put, this is when you use a word to describe the sound something makes.
Some examples of onomatopoeia include words such as whoosh, thud, or meow.
Here’s the case-in-point. Awe doesn’t mean Awww, which doesn’t mean Ahhhh.
—————————————————–
Awe is used to show a condition of extreme surprise or admiration.
“We were in awe of the majesty of the Grand Canyon”
——————————————————
Aww is used as a sentimental interjection, usually showing approval.
“Aww, look at that cute puppy”
——————————————————-
Ahh is used as an interjection to show sudden insight or great approval for something. Usually something soothing.
“Ahh, I get it now! You’ve shown me the light!”
“Ahh, this cup of coffee is just what I needed on this cold morning”
———————————————————
So, there you have it! Go forth and speak goodly, dammit.
